Vismodegib is recommend to be available as a treatment option through routine commissioning for adults with either Gorlin syndrome or non-Gorlin syndrome related multiple basal cell carcinomas within the criteria set out
The use of vismodegib in patients with multiple BCCs has been shown to reduce the size of the cancers, the frequency in which they appear and reduce or avoid the need for surgery in the long term.
Although NICE decided Vismodegib could not be used under its license and the NHS could not commission it, NHS England has carefully reviewed new evidence for the use of Vismodegib and have made a special exemption to allow it to be used for specific treatment. NHS England is going to to be reviewing the use again in 2 years or in the event that annual activity exceeds 100 cases.
